SAVITRI GIRL'S COLLEGE, affiliated to the University of Calcutta, was established on September 14, 1972.
A century ago when female education was a dream for Indian women, Savitri Educational Charitable Trust established Savitri Pathsala in 1905 which later on became a reputed Hindi-medium H.S. School in the Burrabazar area.
In response to the long standing need for a Girls' College in the locality, the Trust decided to establish Savitri Girls' College in 1970 with a noble mission of imparting female education. Late H. K. Jhajharia and M. L. Jalan became the Secretary and President of the College after its inception in 1972.
The College has an ideal academic atmosphere, free from all extraneous disturbances. The teachers are well-qualified and sincere and they aim at educating the students in order to develop their sphere of knowledge, intelligence, self-respect and culture - in short, to make them good citizens of India, who can imbibe both modernity and traditional values in their character.
The College has been accredited in the year 2006 by the National Assessment & Accreditation Council (NAAC).
The College aims to promote critical engagement with the notion of women's empowerment and inclusive education as a form of transformational work that is as democratic in its processes and practices as in its intentions.
It seeks to make the student composition as plural, diverse and representative in character as possible to foster liberal access to higher education for human and social development in the context of globalization.
The activities of the college are designed to fall in line with its vision, mission and objectives. The array of programmes and activities conducted by the different cells and clubs in the college served to make our women intellectually alert, morally upright, religiously oriented, socially conscious, culturally distinct and nationally integrated.
The college organizes interdisciplinary state level Seminars as well as Intra-college departmental seminars.
Teachers are encouraged to undertake research work indeed. The use of educational technology tools and innovative teaching methods enlivens the teaching-learning process.
